| Project Description |
| |
| The
Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation in Cairo is in the
process of replacing the existing Naga Hammadi Barrage by a new
barrage a few kilometers downstream of the old structure to
ensure an uninterrupted supply of irrigation water. The new
barrage is designed to supply water to an increased irrigation
area on both banks of the Nile River. To achieve this, water
will be stored at the new barrage at higher reservoir levels to
provide most favourable hydraulic conditions for dis-charge into
the canal system.
To prevent
negative impacts on agricultural yields and farm incomes due to
water logging in the irrigated area upstream of the Naga Hammadi
Barrage, the EPADP has embarked on a program the major part of
which is the improvement of pumping facilities and of discharge
efficiency of 307 km of open drains by regular maintenance
activities. The covered field drains empty into a system of
tertiary, secondary and primary open drains. The open drainage
system is subject to erosion of sides, siltation, and excessive
aquatic weed growth, factors which, if left unattended will
seriously affect the discharge capacity of the open drains and
consequently also the pumping performance at the drain
out-falls. |
